Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to attend an orientation in order to build?
We offer an orientation for new volunteers once a month. This orientation is not mandatory in order to volunteer.
Am I old enough to build?
Volunteers ages 16 and 17 are welcome to build with us and are asked to bring a liability waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian on their first build day. We require the young volunteer to be accompanied by an adult 25 years of age or older for the first 3 builds. If after the first three builds this young adult is confident and committed he/she is allowed to come on their own. No one under 16 is allowed on a construction site for any reason.
Can I come for a half day?
Individual Volunteers and Groups are encouraged to stay for a full build day from 7:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Exceptions will be made for certain volunteers and volunteer groups. If you need to work a half day, you must clear this first with the Volunteer Coordinator. In general, individual volunteers who want to work a half day must come in the morning so they can hear the safety meeting. If you are a first time volunteer you must stay for a full day.
Do you ever turn volunteers away?
We can hold a maximum of 50 volunteers on the build site in Fullerton. Once we meet our maximum walk-on volunteers or groups who bring more people than they scheduled will be turned away. A full site is a liability and it is often boring for volunteers because there is not enough work for everyone.
When can I start recruiting for volunteers from my group?
Once you receive a confirmation email you have officially been given a build day and you can open this up to your volunteers.
I am registered on VolunteerUP but forgot my password. What do I do?
If you have already registered on VolunteerUP and do not remember your password please do not create a new account, rather, email me and I will retrieve your username and password for you.
I've built with HfHOC before. Do I still need to fill out a liability form?
Volunteers need to fill out a liability form the first time they enter a new site. So, whether or not you have worked on a Habitat build before, Fullerton is a new site so everyone needs to complete the form.
Do you take walk-ons?
Our general policy is to accept five walk-ons per day. We strongly discourage you from doing this. We will only let you on site if the site is not currently full. To avoid this, please either sign up online or through the Volunteer Coordinator.
What does it mean if I am waitlisted?
If you sign up through VolunteerUP and are waitlisted for a day this means that the site is currently full. If we have drop outs you will receive an email inviting you to build!
